The PUR Voyageur Water Purifier
PUR's new Voyageur builds on the foundation of PUR's award winning Hiker water filter. The Hiker won Backpacker
magazine's extensive 1996 filter test hands down, being the number one choice of 27 out of 50 testers. (Backpacker,
December 1996, "The Water Filter Field Test".) There was one area where the Hiker could be improved --
to upgrade the filter capabilities from a "filter", meaning it removes Giardia and bacteria but not viruses, to a "purifier".
Voyageur's iodinated resin core eliminates the threat of viruses. This makes the Voyageur a purifier as opposed to the Hiker which is a filter.
As with all filters, clogging is the number 1 problem. Both the Hiker and the Voyageur feature PURs new
Anti-Clog (TM) technology, which uses a pleated filter instead of a flat one. The pleats increase surface
area ofthe filter itself by 10 times, thus increasing the time interval before clogging occurs up to 10
times as well.
The Voyageur purifier has the same gripable external body as the Hiker, and Voyageur cartridges fit
the Hiker, allowing owners to upgrade their filters to purifiers (adding the iodinated core to treat
for viruses.) A StopTop carbon filter at the end of the output hose reduces unpleasant tastes and odors
in your water. Voyageur retails for $70.
In our editors' view, the Voyageur's easy of use, anti-clogging design, increased purification (removing
viruses), light weight (only 11 ozs), and low cost qualify it as The Gear Review Company's Best of Show
product.
Watch for our upcoming field test and review of the Voyageur!
