Timpanogos - Timpooneke Trail to Grove Creek

Time of year: Early Summer to Late Fall.

Description of hike: The hike starts out gradual at the timpooneke trailhead, located up American Fork Canyon, at approximatley 6,500 feet. The trail then departs and heads to the West up some switchbacks. This trail is part of the Great Western Trail, so follow the Great Western Trail markers and you will not get lost. The trail follows around the base of the Timpanogos mountain, reaching heights of 8500 feet. As you move around the mountain you enter a great valley behind the Mahogany Mountain. This is where you then head for the Grove Creek Trail at one of the springs that feed Grove Creek. From here we saw a herd of about 30 Elk. At the spring you head to the South for three miles through the spectacular Grove Creek canyon. There are many waterfalls and the trail works its way down to a dirt road at the Grove Creek trailhead. This hike has some ups and downs at the begginig where you can change elevation between 100 to 600 feet at a time. The end of the trip has alot of rapid decents, so there is a good workout for the knees.
