3T ARX II Pro Stem 3T ARX II Pro Stem
The engineers at 3T aren't (quite) rocket scientists, but they do seem to recognize a solid design when they've produced one. We're pleased to report that the ARX II Pro Stem's popularity throughout the self-sponsored peloton hasn't escaped their notice, and it returns for another model year with all of its original upgrades to the ARX Pro intact but nothing more besides an updated graphic. With its time-tested 2010 alloy construction and +/- 6 degrees of rise, the ARX II Pro all but guarantees the safety of your cycling ship and all those aboard. The most obvious change from the ARX Pro to the ARX II Pro is that the length of the stem is slightly flattened on the sides. 3T notes that this creates a sleeker profile than the original ARX, but we also notice that it brings the cross section more in line with the squared-off edges of stems like the Integra, which use sharper angles to increase resistance to the torsional flex that can eat up watts while you're pulling on the bars in anger. The face plate's top and bottom have also been trimmed up, bringing the bolts together and reducing both the aerodynamic footprint and the weight -- the ARX II Pro weighs a claimed 5g less than its predecessor at 135g. The stem's hardware marks yet another point of departure, switching from Allen to Torx/star bolts, which is a less immediately obvious difference that, if overlooked, may frustrate the unprepared mechanic. The faceplate attaches with the standard complement of four bolts, but the steerer clamp only uses one, contributing yet more weight savings.

3T ARX II Team Stealth Stem 3T ARX II Team Stealth Stem
There's a time and a place for loud and flashy. Sometimes that place isn't the cockpit of your bike. The 3T ARX Team II Stealth Stem adds a touch of elegance to your cockpit with a subtle, matte black finish that downplays the Team stem's stiff, lightweight performance. The Arx II Team continues the original's tradition of simple, classic construction -- but with a design that drops grams from its already low weight. The ARX Team takes the classic, tubular design of the ARX and further refines it with slightly flattened sides and a sculpted faceplate. The ARX II Team stem's faceplate crimps in tighter at the top and bottom, which results in an ovalized appearance. However, even with the new shape, 3T was still able to retain its hallmark cut-out logo. This generation of the ARX also sees a more precise installation process than previous models. Instead of a traditional four-bolt Allen assembly, the ARX II features a Torx assembly at the faceplate and a single M6 bolt to clamp the stem to the steerer.

3T Arx LTD Stealth Stem 3T Arx LTD Stealth Stem
Satin black is cool. Many of today's top-shelf bikes are designed with a menacing mix of gloss and satin black. To upgrade one of these race-bred rigs with bright, shouty components would defeat the purpose. To hang your handlebar on anything less than the 3T ARX LTD Stealth Stem would be nothing short of sacrilege. The 3T ARX LTD Stealth stem is a perfect match for any 3T handlebars, but they've also made a nod to the practical by making it perfectly compatible with other manufacturers' bars. This is possible because particular attention has been paid to the design of the clamp. Recognizing that modern steerer tubes and handlebars are often made from delicate composite materials, the ARX clamp interface is specifically intended to clamp the handlebar and steerer securely for even the most rugged, Roubaix-like conditions, but gently enough so to ensure that none of the clamped material is compromised. How secure-but-gentle is it' So much so that it's passed the rigorous CEN certification standards test. 3T designs their products from the inside out rather than the outside in. That means that they make use of the natural characteristics of the material in their designs. Composite materials have a grain, like wood, so they're stronger in one plane than another. The key to building strong, light structures using composite material is to tailor the grain of the fibers to line up along the load path. That's why the ARX LTD Stealth stem sports that impossibly sexy unidirectional carbon look rather than a more typical woven appearance.

3T ARX LTD Stem 3T ARX LTD Stem
The ARX LTD Stem is the only stem in 3T's road line made from carbon fiber. While we're not sure why the Team stem didn't get the same treatment, the end result is that the ARX LTD drops an additional 7g of claimed weight compared to the closest alloy competitor in the Italian manufacturer's component armada. The LTD model's carbon construction also means that it's the stiffest stem in 3T's line, so you'll be that much more efficient when you're hammering out of the saddle and every watt lost to a flexing front end is one less you have to cover moves or launch your own attack. Compared to the improved power transfer, the stem's minimal weight savings are, well, minimal; however, when you've already trimmed the maximum grams from your frame, wheels, and drivetrain, dropping minimal weight in the cockpit may be what pushes your non-UCI-legal ride under the coveted 14lb mark. If your quest to drop weight has also led you to a carbon handlebar, then rest assured that the wide spacing of the ARX LTD's faceplate clamp splays the bolts out nice and wide. This diffuses the clamping force across a wider area so that less torque is needed for a secure fit and the torque you do wrench into the titanium bolts isn't concentrated on a narrow spot on the bar. The light texturing inside the clamping area also helps to achieve a firm fit with less torque, and it reduces the risk of carbon-on-carbon creaks and pops when you're using carbon bars.

3T Mountain Team Stem 3T Mountain Team Stem
With its 7075 T6 body and titanium bolts, the Mountain Team Stem is the lightest offering in 3T's off-road line, comparing quite favorably with many road-specific stems. Low weight isn't synonymous with low reliability, though, and the already durable 7075 T6 alloy is made even more resistant to torsional flex with a squared cross section. The wide stem clamping plate further contributes to the stem's stiff reliability.

Easton EA90 Stem Easton EA90 Stem
The Easton EA90 Stem sheds grams for race-minded riders, without sacrificing structural integrity or performance. Its EA90 aluminum tubing is the result of a 3D forging process, yielding Easton's lightest aluminum stem to date. Looking closely at the stem's faceplate, you'll immediately notice the EA90's Distributed Stress Technology or DST, as referred to by Easton. This technology widens the junction between the faceplate and handlebars where the four bolts clamp down, distributing stress over a wider area for extra peace of mind when you're using lightweight aluminum or carbon fiber handlebars. Note that this stem comes in two rises, 0 degrees (sometimes referred to as 90 degrees) and +/- 10 degrees (sometimes referred to as 80/100 degrees). The steerer tube's height is 40mm, and two opposing bolts secure it firmly in place to minimize stress. The EA90 comes with a 31. 8mm handlebar clamp and 1 1/8th-inch steerer clamp only.

Easton EC70 SL Stem Easton EC70 SL Stem
You've got a carbon frame, a carbon fork, a carbon seatpost, and a carbon bar. Hell, even your cages and pedal bodies are carbon. It's time to complete the unidirectional, high-modulus chain with the missing link: Easton's EC70 SL Stem. It's not as light as the only-weight-matters EC90 SL model, but its claimed weight of 140g still puts it in competition with most lightweight stems while relegating the bulkier "aero" models to the overweight bin.

Easton EC90 SL Stem Easton EC90 SL Stem
The EC90 SL Stem is one of the lightest on the market, but that's a pleasant by-product of Easton's design principles. They set out to produce a stem that can handle the rigors of CX and XC racing. And, even after focusing on strength, this sculpted carbon stem just happens to be light enough for today's ultra-light road bikes. This makes the EC90 SL a perfect choice for broken pavement, gravel roads, and cobblestone-strewn race courses. Easton uses the same TaperWall carbon construction as its highly respected handlebars. This is not just more material in some areas for strength and less in other zones for weight reduction. It promises a void-free, perfectly clean carbon laminate throughout -- which is the only way to avoid fracturing caused by faulty carbon construction. Along with TaperWall, Easton adds Top Lock, which immobilizes the face plate against the surface of the stem once the top two titanium faceplate bolts are threaded and torqued properly. It's designed this way so that the stem cannot place uneven pressure on the handlebar. To finish the installation procedure, simply torque the bottom two bolts to spec. An even distribution of loads to the handlebar is one advantage of Top Lock, another is the faceplate cannot flex around or vibrate when you ride over rough roads. A faceplate that doesn't vibrate cannot wear against the handlebars -- which greatly reduces the chance of weakening your favorite carbon bars. The Easton EC90 SL Stem is made of Easton Carbon and uses titanium hardware for the faceplate and steerer clamp. It's available in lengths from 80-130mm in 10mm increments. It's sized for 1-1/8" steerer tubes and has an oversized 31. 8mm bar clamp diameter and 0 rise. It comes in a Matte Carbon finish.

ENVE Direct Mount Stem ENVE Direct Mount Stem
An industry first, the Enve Direct Mount Stem brings carbon to the world of triple clamp forks. Enve makes some of the strongest stems on the market, and this ultra-light, sub-120g design loses nothing in strength to alloy alternatives. The carbon layup produces a stem that's significantly stiffer than anything else available, which translates to precise handling. Steering inputs and trail feedback are directly transferred rather than lost to flex, and when combined with Enve's DH handlebars, this feeling is amplified as they were designed to seamlessly work together. For added durability, the threaded inserts are bridged, connecting the left and right holes to prevent pull-out. The Enve Direct Mount Stem is made in the USA and comes in two lengths; 60 and 50mm. The 60mm length has a rise of 15mm and the 50 has a rise of 20mm.

ENVE Mountain Stem ENVE Mountain Stem
ENVE's Mountain Stem picks up where the original ENVE Stem left off, and gets a little shorter, a little lighter, and a little more "mountain-looking" in this iteration. Only the longest option, at 85mm, weighs in at over 100 grams. That's light, and that's all-in weight: stem, aluminum faceplate, and Ti hardware. And, the engineers over at ENVE told us that they threw out more designs and prototypes of this stem than any other product they've designed, because they wanted to get it just right. We think it shows in the finished product.

FSA K-Force Light Stem FSA K-Force Light Stem
For some components, 'lightweight' and 'carbon' can be dirty words. In the early 2000's weight-weenie craze, the peloton suffered under the malleable malfeasance of poorly designed, lightweight cockpits. Well, those days are finally past us, in part, because of pristine designs like the FSA K-Force Light Stem having taught the cycling world a very important lesson--innovate or don't bother. The K-Force Light Stem does just that by using a total carbon and titanium construction that offers up rigidity, style, and massive weight savings. FSA's K-Force Light Stem features a 100% monocoque carbon fiber body construction. This design achieves an equilibrium between weight-savings and ride quality without sacrificing on either polarity. The K-Force Light provides a stiff and direct platform to the bars, while weighing in around an astoundingly low 150g. And while most weight-shaving stems feel more malleable than rigid, the K-Force's design avoids the wet-noodle-zeitgeist by eliminating any steel or alloy from the stem. You heard that right. The K-Force Light uses only titanium hardware to secure to the steer tube and to attach the carbon faceplate. The FSA K-Force Light Stem is available in four sizes from 100 to 130mm. Please note that this stem is only compatible with 1-1/8in steer tubes and 31. 8mm clamp diameter bars.

FSA OS-99 Stem FSA OS-99 Stem
Let's get one thing out of the way--the OS-99 Road Stem is the lightest stem that FSA makes, and no, the "7050 aluminum body" isn't a typo. By using a proprietary 3D forging technique and special heat treatment ("witchcraft" is the technical name) FSA makes the OS-99 as strong as a heavyweight stem but as light as a part made of pure carbon fiber. To be fair, the faceplate is built partially from carbon, to achieve the perfect balance of strength and weight, and the unbreakable bolts have been forged from titanium, so the OS-99 isn't pure aluminum. The faceplate also has a serrated surface that will grip both carbon and aluminum bars, and a rise of +/- six degrees, depending on which way you set it up.

PRO Tharsis XC Stem PRO Tharsis XC Stem
Given that it shares the corporate family tree with Shimano, it's no surprise that PRO developed cockpit kit that allows for clean, flawless routing of the new XTR Di2. PRO's calling this system Tharsis, and the Tharsis XC Stem is one of the two key ingredients. As PRO's own Bas Schpveld describes it, the Tharsis stem and handlebar combination is a "showcase for Shimano" to demonstrate the possibilities of not only clean shifting and routing, but the simple elegance of a drivetrain and cockpit designed to interface seamlessly. In addition to the internal routing, this interface also involves a clamping system that ditches the usual star nut in favor of a threaded spacer that compresses the stack, leaving the steerer tube free to house a Di2 battery. The internal, intuitive Di2 routing is only part of the Tharsis XC Stem's story, though, as its lightweight alloy and titanium bolts keep the claimed grams under 145 for the 100mm option. It's also stiff enough for XC sprints and durable enough to survive standard trail abuse and the occasional instances when a bike gets a little too intimate with a passing tree. After all, clean lines and stylish routing are useless if the kit wilts at the first sign of trail furniture, and the Tharsis models were developed in conjunction with the riders on Shimano's sponsored XC teams to ensure that their fortitude matches their style.

Syntace Force 109 Syntace Force 109
Equipped for oversized 31. 8-millimeter bars, the Syntace Force 109 stem features 3D-forged aluminum alloy construction for the utmost in strength and security. Its thicker stem tube boosts stiffness and strength, with its oversized diameter continuing to the clamp area. Titanium bolts shave off precious grams, while the 200-degree handlebar "bed" reduces bar flex compared to stems with traditional 180-degree options. Ultimately, this allows your oversized handlebar to sit deeper and more secure, decreasing bar fatigue and flex over time.

Syntace Megaforce2 Stem Syntace Megaforce2 Stem
Syntace's Megaforce2 Stem is designed specifically for the wide handlebars that have taken over the market. Its clamp face is an ultra-wide 42mm, which gives it exponentially better clamping force, which translates into less twisting of the bars, and more precise steering. It's also available in an incredibly short 30mm -a perfect match for many bikes' longer reach measurements. The Megaforce2 is made from a high-strength aluminum alloy, and clamps to the bar using two distinct pieces, which are held in place by a total of four titanium bolts. It comes in a single angle, +/- 6 degrees.

Zipp Service Course SL Stem Zipp Service Course SL Stem
Zipp's entire Service Course line proves that aluminum still has a place in cycling componentry -- it will never be as light as carbon, sure, but it will never be as expensive either, and that's enough of a reason for us to stand behind it. Zipp strikes an admirable balance between cost, weight, and performance with the Service Course SL Alloy Stem, which features a 3D-forged 7075 aluminum construction to give it a mix of superb strength and stiffness inspired by kit built for the peloton. Both stems in the Service Course line are built in the same tooling, with smooth lines and a newly redesigned faceplate with enough negative space to for easy handlebar orientation. Compared to the pedestrian version, the Service Course SL stem drops some grams with CNC-machining and by replacing the stainless steel Torx bolts with titanium.

Zipp Service Course Stem Zipp Service Course Stem
More recently known for their advances in the world of carbon, the engineering wizards at Zipp have shown they still know and value innovative aluminum componentry with the Service Course line. Zipp continues to impress us with its Service Course Stem, offering a highly functional design that originally addressed the needs of pros and now is available for the rest of us. It provides exceptional stiffness, lightness, and positional flexibility, but it does so at a reasonable price in comparison to more expensive, often heavier stems. Zipp 3D forges the Service Course Stem from 7075 aluminum. This forging process aligns the grain structure of the aluminum, giving the material strength that allows for a thin-walled final structure and smooth shaping that complements today's sculpted carbon frames. Zipp uses durable titanium TORX head bolts on the stem to provide consistent, precise torque readings, and the bolts are more difficult to strip than traditional hex-head bolts when making pre-race adjustments. The Service Course Alloy Stem is offered in a range of seven sizes from 70 to 130mm in 10mm increments. Each length is available in two angle options -- the +/-6 option is ubiquitous these days, but the +/-17 models remind us of a bygone era where stems were dead flat and oh-so pro. It has a 31. 8mm clamp diameter and is a perfect match for Zipp handlebars, and the 1-1/8" steerer clamp has a stack height of 41mm.

Zipp SL Speed Carbon Stem Zipp SL Speed Carbon Stem
Zipp doesn't hesitate to extend their craftiness beyond their signature aerodynamic wheels. This SL Speed Carbon Stem is a prime example of Zipp's quest to reshape bike componentry from bottom to top. The most notable aspect of this stem is its ethereal lightness (a mere 123 grams in 100mm length). Being this light, Zipp uses exacting construction standards and some forward thinking to maintain the same top-notch level of performance and durability you'd find on their other go-fast products. The SL Speed Carbon Stem has rearward facing stem bolts, similar to what we've seen on Oval stems in the past. On Zipp's design, the bolts thread directly into a two-piece carbon/titanium faceplate. On the backside, the single-bolt steerer clamp appears standard in every way, but Zipp found, through product testing, that normal fasteners don't always seat properly in their bores when the clamp is torqued to spec onto the fork steerer tube. To alleviate this, they added self-aligning washers to ensure positive contact between the stem and the shoulders of the fasteners. This minute detail is one that allowed Zipp to create the main structure of the SL Speed Stem from 100% carbon fiber, without any co-molded alloy parts. The Zipp SL Speed Carbon Stem uses uni-directional carbon fiber, laminated in such a way as to have incredible torsional stiffness to resist twisting when you're really cranking on the bars in a sprint or uphill. It has a 31. 8mm clamp diameter and is available in six lengths from 70 to 120mm in 10mm increments. The stack height at the steerer clamp is 41mm and the stem is angled at +/- 6 degrees.

Zipp SL Sprint Carbon Stem Zipp SL Sprint Carbon Stem
When it was first unveiled, the peculiar shape of Zipp's SL Sprint Carbon Stem may have seemed a bit out of place when juxtaposed with traditional, tubular models. Now, assymetrical stems like it are common place because the SL Sprint's shaping and unidirectional carbon construction transmit power with efficient confidence in even the most hectic bunch finales. The faceplate and bolts are titanium, which helps keep the stem in the climber's weight category, despite its sprinting pedigree.

Zipp SL Sprint Carbon Stem Zipp SL Sprint Carbon Stem
When you want a stem that won't bow to the pressures of a pack sprint, Zipp has the answer. The Zipp SL Sprint Carbon Stem is the updated version of its highly popular SL145. It is strong enough for the most aggressive pack sprint, yet it is light enough to satisfy the weight-weenie in all of us. Like the SL145, the SL Sprint Carbon Stem has a +/-12 degree angle. What this means is that the effective stem angle is 77. 5 degrees relative to the steerer tube. While this is not parallel to the ground as in a 73 degree stem, it is much more aero than the 80-84 degree angle range provided my most other manufacturers. The stem was created as a complement to the rest of its race-worthy carbon cockpit offerings. Both the stem and faceplate were constructed with unidirectional, hand-wrapped carbon fiber. They were then treated with a clear coat, giving the overall finished stem a lustrous look. The faceplate and steerer tube bolts are titanium, but not just any titanium; Zipp sourced these bolts from the same Italian producer used by the Ducati MotoGP racing program.
