Niner Air 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2017 Niner Air 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2017
While we've been known to rip some gnarly trails on a cyclocross rig and bask in the adrenaline rush of simply surviving with life and limb intact, we'll readily admit that sometimes a little bit of squish would make the ride a lot bit better. For those of us that love to ride fast and revel in the challenge of nimbly picking through technical, rocky sections that full suspension whips plow indiscriminately through, Niner drops the 2017 Air 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame. With a Boosted rear axle spacing and tweaked geometry, this hardtail is ready to shred. The most notable changes include a lower handlebar height, giving the Air 9 a nudge towards the venerable RKT 9 RDO's aggressive positioning. Paired with a longer cockpit and slacker head tube, this makes for a frame that handles deftly on knife-edge lines and jumps the second you need it to. Compared to the previous Air 9 the chainstays scrunched in by 4mm to 435mm for lightning fast acceleration and nimble handing without crossing over into jumpy, squirrely territory. The new Air 9 RDO also sizes down its seatpost diameter to 27. 2mm to take advantage of that little bit of extra flex and resulting comfort found in a narrower post. Out back, this year's model now boasts another different dimension; namely, a 12 x 148mm Boost axle width, keeping it in line with current trends for wider hubs and stiffer wheelsets. Niner also tucks the brake caliper mounts on the chainstay, neatly within the rear triangle. This makes sense from a frame building standpoint, as the seatstay is generally the burlier of the two rear stays and the placement protects the caliper somewhat in the event of a crash. We also think that particular placement just plain looks better than an ungainly bump hovering above a seatstay. As with Niner's other RDO offerings, the Air 9 RDO is constructed using Niner's Carbon Compaction System (CCS), which gives Niner complete control over tube wall thickness across the frame. This makes for tube walls ...

Niner Jet 9 RDO 2-Star SLX Complete Mountain Bike - 2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 2-Star SLX Complete Mountain Bike - 2017
The similarities between the 2016 and 2017 Jet 9 RDOs lie mostly in the name, with this year's version seeing some drastic changes that usher this much-loved trail machine into a whole new world of versatility. The 2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 2-Star SLX Complete Mountain Bike is longer across the top, steeper out back, and slacker up front. Add in 20 more millimeters of Continuously Varying Arc (CVA) travel than its predecessor, and this Jet 9 is better at just about everything that made the original such a favorite. Whether you're grinding climbs, shredding descents, or powering through fast, flowy singletrack, the Jet 9 RDO lives up to its versatile reputation. This particular build gets kitted up in Shimano's workhorse SLX componentry, a dropper post, and Niner Alloy hoops. As with most bikes in the current trail generation, the key element underwriting the new Jet 9's versatile geometry is its Boost rear axle. Bumping the spacing up to 148mm lets Niner chop 21mm off of chainstays by slamming the rear wheel up into the seat tube. The seat tube contributes to that versatility, too. Despite the fact that the 2017 Jet 9 comes with 130mm of front travel, it's got the same seat tube angle as the 2016 Jet 9 with a 100mm fork. Adding 30mm up front would typically force you out of the bike's center; however, the new Jet 9's geometry keeps you on top of the pedals while the included dropper post allows you to clear out some cockpit space so you can throw the bike around on descents. The bike's updates shine at the front end, too. In 2016, the Jet 9 was limited to a 71 or 70. 5-degree head tube, depending on whether you were running a 100 or 110mm fork. For 2017 (as configured here), it drops to 67. 5 degrees. This puts the Jet 9 right on the cusp of moderate stability and enduro abandon. When paired with the new iteration's longer reach and shorter stem, that angle means the bike can ride roughshod across all manner of trail furniture without sacrificing responsive steering...

Niner Jet 9 RDO 27.5+ 2-Star SLX Complete Bike - 2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 27.5+ 2-Star SLX Complete Bike - 2017
2017 sees some drastic changes to the Jet 9 platform to push the much-loved trail machine into a whole new dimension of versatility. The new Niner Jet 9 RDO 27. 5+ 2-Star SLX Complete Bike is slacker up front, steeper out back, longer across the top, and boasts 20mm more travel than its predecessor to take on ever gnarlier terrain. It also gets 27. 5+ compatibility, as outfitted here, while still retaining the option to swap over to 29in wheels should you want to get some use out of that set gathering dust in your garage. This particular build gets kitted up in Shimano's workhorse SLX drivetrain, with a dropper post and Stan's NoTubes alloy hoops completing a versatile package that's ready to tackle grinding climbs, shred descents, or power through fast, flowy singletrack. Despite the fact that the 2017 Jet 9 comes with 140mm of front travel, its seat tube angle nearly identical to the 2016 Jet 9 with a 100mm fork. Adding 40mm up front would typically force you out of the bike's center; however, the new Jet 9's geometry and plus-sized wheels keep you on top of the pedals while the included dropper post allows you to clear out some cockpit space so you can throw the bike around on descents. The bike's updates shine at the front end, too. In 2016, the Jet 9 was limited to a 71 or 70. 5-degree head tube, depending on whether you were running a 100 or 110mm fork. For 2017 (as configured here), it drops to 67 degrees. Niner Jet 9 RDO 27.5+ 3-Star XT Complete Mountain Bike - 2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 27.5+ 3-Star XT Complete Mountain Bike - 2017
The latest addition to Niner's trail bike team is--wait for it--27. 5+ compatible. Given that Niner is literally named after wagon wheels, the Jet 9 RDO 27. 5+ 3-Star XT Complete Mountain Bike's brave departure may initially be unsettling to the brand faithful; however, we're confident that the added capabilities of 27. 5+ will more than win over any 29er heroes. The new wheel size isn't the only big change, though. The 2017 Jet 9 represents a radical departure from the previous Jet geometry. It's now longer across the top, slacker up front, steeper out back, and has 20 more millimeters of Continuously Varying Arc (CVA) travel. When combined with the plush traction of the 27. 5+ platform, these changes equate to better climbing and--more importantly--a more aggressive approach to trail furniture typically reserved for all-mountain bikes. As with most bikes in the current trail generation, the key element underwriting the new Jet 9's versatile geometry is its Boost rear axle. Bumping the spacing up to 148mm lets Niner chop 21mm off of chainstays by slamming the rear wheel up into the seat tube. The extra clearance also allows for 3in tires on 27. 5 rims, which equates to more traction across rain-slicked roots and a bit more cushion when the terrain gets chunky. The steeper seat tube keeps you centered over the pedals for more efficient climbing while the included dropper post allows you to clear out some cockpit space so you can throw the bike around on descents. The 27. 5+ Jet 9 also includes a deeper fork, running 140mm instead of the 29er model's 130. This keeps the geometry relatively in line across wheel sizes, though the 27. 5+ version does shed an extra half degree in the head tube. This positions the 27. 5+ Jet 9 that much closer to enduro nastiness. It also pairs nicely with the new iteration's longer reach and shorter stem, making for a bike that can ride roughshod across all manner of trail furniture without sacrificing responsive steering. Slack head tu.

Niner Jet 9 RDO 3-Star XT Complete Bike - 2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 3-Star XT Complete Bike - 2017
It's not a far stretch to say that the Niner engineers went back to the drawing board and rebuilt the Jet 9 from the ground up. Similar in name but drastically different in geometry, the 2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO 3-Star XT Complete Bike goes much further than merely adding travel. It's longer across the top, steeper out back, slacker up front, and better at just about everything that made the original Jet 9 such a standout. Whether you're grinding climbs, bombing descents, or reveling in fast, flowy singletrack, the Jet 9 RDO lives up to its versatile reputation. This particular build gets kitted up in Shimano's lauded XT componentry, a dropper post, and Stan's NoTubes Arch MK3 hoops. Niner Jet 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2017
Niner's engineers have been busy, going back to the drawing board and revamping almost every frameset for 2017. It was worth the effort though, and the 2017 Niner Jet 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame is back with a massive facelift, 20 additional millimeters of Continuously Varying Arc (CVA) travel, compatibility with both 29er and 27. 5+ wheels, and even more versatility than its predecessor. It's slacker up front, steeper out back, longer across the top, and flat out better at all the things that made us love the original Jet 9. Despite the fact that the 2017 Jet 9 comes with a recommended front travel pairing of 130mm for 29in wheels and 140mm with 27. 5+, it's got a similar seat tube angle as the 2016 Jet 9 with a 100mm fork. Adding that much travel up front would typically force you out of the bike's center; however, the new Jet 9's geometry keeps you on top of the pedals for stable handling and efficient power transfer. The bike's updates shine at the front end, too. In 2016, the Jet 9 was limited to a 71 or 70. 5-degree head tube, depending on whether you were running a 100 or 110mm fork. For 2017 it drops to 67. 5 degrees when paired with a 130mm fork and 29in wheels and down to 67 degrees with a 140mm fork and 27. 5+ wheels. This puts the Jet 9 right on the cusp of moderate stability and enduro abandon. When paired with the new iteration's longer reach and shorter stem, that angle means the bike can ride roughshod across all manner of trail furniture without sacrificing responsive steering. Despite the geometry changes, Niner's Race Day Optimized (RDO) construction process remains relatively unchanged. This is a good thing, as Niner's compaction metho...

Niner JET 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2018 Niner JET 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2018
The latest Niner Jet RDO Mountain Bike Frame reboot took what we knew of the XC race rocket Jet, and gave it a facelift adding some features making it a better all-around trail bike. Niner added 20mm of additional travel to the Continuously Varying Arc (CVA) rear end bringing the total to 120mm and added the ability to swap back and forth between both 29er and 27. 5+ wheels. The headtube is now slacker, the seattube is steeper, reach has gotten longer, and all-in-all made the Jet an awesome mid-travel machine while the RKT steps in as the XC racehorse. We love the change and after just one ride, think you will too.The move to boost spacing allows Niner to update the geometry and by doing so, they hacked 21mm off of the chainstays moving the rear wheel underneath the rider. This contributes to quick climbing and handling, not lost from the original Jet, despite the longer travel. The steep seat tube angle also contributes here. Niner recommends paring a 130mm for 29-inich wheels and 140mm with 27. 5+ and despite the slacker front end, the seat tube angle remains similar to the older, steeper Jet 9 with its shorter travel fork. The steeper seattube keeps you on top of the pedals for more efficient pedaling, more intuitive handling, and prevents you from feeling like you threw a leg over a chopper. With the recommended fork length for 29 and 27. 5+ wheels the respective headtube angles sit at either 67. 5 or 67 degrees. In practice, that angle strikes a happy medium between a quick and agile trail machine and one that continues to add confidence as both speed and gradient increase. The move to a longer reach paired with a shorter stem lengthens the wheelbase so you won't think twice hucking the bike into a nasty rock garden, yet steers quick enough getting you through uphill and downhill switchbacks with ease. One thing that does remain the same on Niner's Race Day Optimized (RDO) frames are the materials and construction processes. Niner's compaction method squeez...

Niner Jet 9 RDO SLX Fox Complete Bike - with Stans Wheels Niner Jet 9 RDO SLX Fox Complete Bike - with Stans Wheels
Let's face it, we could all use a bit more confidence when holding a line through chunky sections of trail, pedaling up a steep climb with technical moves, and dropping into fast descents where mistakes are costly. Realizing the modern trail rider is seeking something a bit more capable than the XC whippets of yesteryear, the savvy folks at Niner designed the Jet 9 RDO SLX Fox Complete Bike with confidence-inspiring geometry, so you can focus on having a blast on the trail, instead of merely making it down alive. The newest version sports 120-millimeters of efficient, yet plush CVA suspension, paired with a 130-millimeter Fox 34 Factory Fork to smooth out the rough stuff as you plunge into wicked descents. As you'd expect with modern trail bikes moving towards the aggressive end of the riding spectrum, the newest Jet 9 RDO is both slacker and longer than the previous generation for greater composure when the trail gets steep and rocky. You'll find the 67. 5-degree head tube angle strikes the sweet spot between light, precise steering inputs and high-speed confidence on the descent. Even though it's generously long in reach figures, the Jet 9 RDO is shorter in the chainstays, lending snappy handling when you're railing around sweeping berms and quickly changing direction to avoid obstacles. Overall, the Jet 9 RDO lives up to Niner's reputation of nimble wagon-wheel machines designed for riding fast and having fun. Another aspect of the redesign for the current generation of Jet 9 RDO lies in its ability to accept the voluminous rubber of 27. 5+ wheels, thanks to its Boost rear axle spacing. Bumping up the spacing to 148 millimeters enables the Jet 9 RDO to readily accept 27. 5+ wheels rolling on massive 3. 0-inch tires, should you feel the need to add another wheel size to your arsenal. If you're content with the provided 29-inch wheels, you'll find it clears a 29 x 2. 4-inch rear tire without issue, which remains standard for the rider seeking optimal grip and ...

Niner RIP 9 RDO 2-Star SLX Complete Mountain Bike - 2017 Niner RIP 9 RDO 2-Star SLX Complete Mountain Bike - 2017
For 2017, Niner's RIP 9 RDO 2-Star SLX Complete Mountain Bike resembles the previous iteration in name only. In fact, it almost resembles 2016's WFO more than the RIP that it's at least nominally replacing. The suspension is deeper, the head tube is slacker, the seat tube steeper, and chainstays stubbier, and the top tube longer--all of which puts it in a class capable of moving freely between trail and enduro. Some call this impossible; some call it versatile; we call it all-mountain; and Niner calls it the only possible way to improve on the previous RIP 9. Whatever you call it, the new RIP 9 owes much of its come-all-ye capabilities to the introduction of Boost axle spacing. By bumping the rear axle out to 148mm, Niner was able to buy enough clearance at the bottom bracket to shorten the chainstays and sharpen the seat tube angle by 11mm and two degrees, respectively. These subtle changes make the rear triangle that much more responsive to input while also pushing the rider's engine up over the pedals. The stubby stays also keep the bike agile, but with a 67-degree head tube and 160mm of Lyrik forgiveness up front, it's just as happy to try flattening everything in its path--or at least bailing you out when your lines start to get a bit too ambitious. In the event that discretion wins the day, the RIP 9's longer top tube and short stem keep handling on-point, despite that low head tube angle, so you can always fall back on those dicey stays to navigate stretches of especially techy terrain. Either way, take solace in knowing that most of the bike's angles are similar to the WFO even though it maintains the precise handling of its predecessor. Given that mixed pedigree, the new RIP 9 enjoys playing in rock gardens as much as barreling over horst and graben rootscapes. So there's obviously a lot of new radness with the RIP 9, but two things remain felicitously unchanged: the Race Day Optimized (RDO) construction method and the Constantly Varying Arc (CVA) suspe...

Niner RIP 9 RDO 27.5+ 2-Star SLX Complete Bike - 2017 Niner RIP 9 RDO 27.5+ 2-Star SLX Complete Bike - 2017
Niner's breaking tradition and expanding its options with the 2017 RIP 9 RDO 27. 5+ 2-Star SLX Complete Bike. Yes, you read that right. 27. 5+. That wheel and tire pairing is so nimble, so plush, and so grippy that we suppose it was only a matter of time. The frame itself is also somewhat expanded. Simultaneously slacker, longer, and even more responsive on climbs, the RIP 9's [R]Evolution geometry boasts the versatility to shred rock gardens and technical descents as eagerly as it scales steep grades. This build is kitted up with Shimano's workhorse SLX drivetrain, a dropper post, and Stan's NoTubes hoops to expand your definition of fun on the trail. The frame's versatility is heavily influenced by its Boost axle spacing. By bumping the rear axle out to 148mm, Niner was able to buy enough clearance at the bottom bracket to shorten the chainstays and sharpen the seat tube angle by 11mm and 2. 5 degrees, respectively. Reducing imperfections makes for a more structurally sound frame, and the targeted control over lay-up ...

Niner RIP 9 RDO 27.5+ 3-Star XT Complete Mountain Bike - 2017 Niner RIP 9 RDO 27.5+ 3-Star XT Complete Mountain Bike - 2017
For 2017 RIP 9 RDO 27. 5+ 3-Star XT Complete Mountain Bike, Niner took what was arguably the ultimate in trail bikes and threw in some tweaks to push it even further into the all-mountain realm. In doing so, it also ushers in 27. 5+ tires, an act of heresy that only makes sense in the Niner genre when you step back and see the similarity in circumference between that classic 29er tire and the smaller-wheeled, yet decidedly donut-sized 27. 5+ rabble-rouser. All at once Longer, slacker, and paradoxically more responsive on climbs, the RIP 9's versatile [R]Evolution geometry shreds rock gardens as eagerly as it scales steep grades. This build gets dressed up in Shimano's precisely-shifting workhourse XT drivetrain, a dropper post, and Stan's NoTubes hoops for a whole new level of fun in the dirt. Niner RIP 9 RDO 27.5+ 5-Star Eagle X01 Complete Mountain Bike - 2017 Niner RIP 9 RDO 27.5+ 5-Star Eagle X01 Complete Mountain Bike - 2017
If the 2016 iteration of Niner's RIP 9 is the ultimate trail bike, then its completely reimagined successor expands that empire to also include the all-mountain realm--but it does so through a decidedly heretical act. The RIP 9 RDO 27. 5+ 5-Star Eagle X01 Complete Mountain Bike multiplies every aspect that made its predecessor so successful. Longer, slacker, and yet inexplicably more responsive on climbs, the RIP 9's confusingly versatile [R]Evolution geometry chews up rock gardens as eagerly as it cleans steep grades. And that's all well and good, but Niner has done the unthinkable by combining it with 27. 5+ wheels. The result of this unholy coupling is a delightfully playful bit of wagon-wheel heresy that we're happy to indulge. Before we dive deeper into the frame, though, we'll linger briefly on the build kit, which centers on 27. 5+ (Shock! Horror!) ENVE HV wheels and SRAM's shiny new Eagle X01 12-speed drivetrain. With the addition of a 50t granny cog, Eagle offsets the bike's 27. 5 heresy with a climbing benediction when you find yourself out of gas, out of mettle, but not yet out of the woods, climbing-wise. The X01 version may not have the glitzy qualities of XX1, but the frame's devilish versatility will steal the show as soon as rubber hits dirt, anyway. And this frame is versatile--a quality that it owes in large part Boost axle spacing. By bumping the rear axle out to 148mm, Niner was able to buy enough clearance at the bottom bracket to shorten the chainstays and sharpen the seat tube angle by 11mm and 2. 5 degrees, respectively. These subtle changes make the rear triangle that much more responsive to input while also pushing the rider's engine up over the pedals. Niner RIP 9 RDO 3-Star XT Complete Mountain Bike - 2017 Niner RIP 9 RDO 3-Star XT Complete Mountain Bike - 2017
Niner's RIP 9 RDO 3-Star XT Complete Mountain Bike got quite the facelift for 2017. It now boasts a deeper suspension, slacker head tube, steeper seat tube, stubbier chainstays, and a longer top tube, helping it span the gap between its trail heritage and your enduro aspirations. Kitted out with Shimano's XT drivetrain, a dropper post, and Stan's NoTubes hoops, the RIP 9's newly found all-mountain versatility takes its much-loved predecessor's capabilities to an entirely new level. In addition to the geometry tweaks, the new RIP 9 owes much of its versatility to the introduction of Boost axle spacing. The RIP 9's longer top tube and short stem keep handling on-point, despite that low head tube angle, so you can always fall back on those stubby stays to navigate stretches of especially technical terrain. There's clearly a lot of new radness with the RIP 9, but two things remain pleasantly unchanged: the Race Day Optimized (RDO) construction method and the Constantly Varying Arc (CVA) suspension design. RDO involves a dual-compression process that eliminates resin pooling and allows precise control over wall-thickness. Reducing imperfections makes for a more structurally sound frame, and the targeted control over lay-up and wall thickness lets Niner buttress that structure where appropriate and reduce material where it'll save weight without sacrificing stiffness. The result marks the n...

Niner RIP 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2017 Niner RIP 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2017
It may have the same name as its predecessor, but the 2017 Niner RIP 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame went in for some serious upgrades before stepping into the limelight. Dropping with a slacker head tube, steeper seat tube, longer top tube, stubbier chainstays, and a deeper suspension, the new RIP 9 RDO bridges the gap between its trail heritage and enduro aspirations to settle firmly into all-mountain territory. And surprisingly, given Niner's historic dedication to the eponymous 29er, the frame now boasts compatibility with both 29in and 27. 5+ wheels so you can choose the size that best fits your riding style. In addition to the geometry tweaks, the new RIP 9 gains a heap of versatility with the introduction of Boost axle spacing. Boost spacing makes for stiffer wheels, which wagon wheels are uniquely qualified to benefit from, but it also opens up a world of options throughout the rear triangle. By pushing the rear axle out to 148mm, Niner was able to finagle enough clearance at the bottom bracket to shorten the chainstays by 11mm and sharpen the seat tube angle by two degrees. These subtle changes make the rear triangle that much more responsive to input while also pushing the bike's engine (read: you) up over the pedals. The stubby stays keep the bike agile, but the slack-ish head tube means the RIP 9 RDO also revels in attempts to flatten everything in its path--or at least bailing you out when your lines start to get a bit too ambitious. Depending on the fork and wheels you pair it with, the Rip 9's front end can hit as low as 66. 5 degrees. Its longer top tube pairs well with a short stem and wide bar to keep handling on-point, despite that low head tube angle, so you can always fall back on those short stays to navigate stretches of especially technical terrain. There's obviously oodles of new radness with the RIP 9 RDO, but two things remain pleasantly unchanged: The Race Day Optimized (RDO) construction method and the Constantly Varying Arc (CVA) suspens...

Niner RIP 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2018 Niner RIP 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2018
The new Niner RIP 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame got some serious upgrades and share very little with its predecessor other than its name. A slacker head tube, steeper seat tube, longer reach, shorter chainstays, and a touch more travel, the new RIP 9 RDO increases its trail aggression and transitions well for enduro stages and big shuttle days. The frame also deviates from Niner's 29-inch wheel dedication and offers compatibility for both 29in and 27. 5+ wheels to suit your riding and terrain. The boost spacing affords the geometry tweaks and the ability to run both wheel sizes. Boost spacing also builds stiffer wheels, benefiting larger diameter hoops, and a stiffer rear end. By widening the dropouts to 148mm, Niner was able to free up enough clearance between the chainstays to shorten them 11mm. These changes translate to a rear triangle that's much nimbler to rider input and quicker through tight trails. The short stays keep the bike quick and the slack head tube lets the RIP live up to its name as it will absolutely plow through anything in its path and encourage you to stay off the brakes. The RIP can go as slack as 66. 5 degrees with a 170mm fork. Its long reach and requisite short stem and wide bar keep handling quick and dismays the typically lazy handling often found with slack head tube angle. We found that the bike wants us to get into all kinds of high-speed danger and allows for an amazing margin of error giving us confidence to progress. The RIP 9 RDO continues with Race Day Optimized (RDO) carbon compaction construction methods in which carbon plies are cured under intense pressure to ensure proper wall thickness and minimize strength sapping voids. This also flushes out excess resin producing a remarkably resilient structure and matches the engineering specifications for strength, durability and weight, as well as looking super clean and stealthy. The Constantly Varying Arc (CVA) suspension design remains unchanged, but adds 25mm more travel, bringin...

Niner RIP 9 RDO SLX Fox Complete Bike - with Stans Wheels Niner RIP 9 RDO SLX Fox Complete Bike - with Stans Wheels
Easily the most capable machine in Niner's line, the RIP 9 RDO SLX Fox Complete Mountain Bike blurs the line between aggressive trail machine and brawny enduro sled with its steamrolling 29er wheels paired with 150-millimeters of plush CVA suspension and a long, slacked-out geometry that screams of confidence when the trail gets fast and rowdy. This particular version is kitted out with the workhorse dependability of a Shimano SLX drivetrain, alongside a 160-millimeter Fox 36 Factory Fork for rock-devouring confidence and a RockShox Monarch Plus RC3 shock for luxury car-like plushness out back. As you'd expect from modern trail bikes pushing towards the longer and slacker end of the riding spectrum, the RIP 9 RDO is roomy in the cockpit (i. e. long reach figures), paired with a shorter stem for quick-handling confidence when you're manuevering around trail obstacles and cleaning tight switchbacks. The 67-degree head tube angle gives the RIP 9 RDO a balanced feel that's both confident at charging bigger lines, yet one that retains nimble handling along sweeping berms and tight sections of trail--both areas where long-travel 29ers are usually lacking in adeptness and skill. Another figure to note is its relatively steep 75. 5-degree seat tube angle, which places you in an optimal position to lay power down on tricky climbs. Another aspect of the latest redesign for the RIP 9 RDO lies in its ability to accept the voluminous rubber of 27. 5+ wheels, thanks to its Boost rear axle spacing. Increasing the rear axle to 148 millimeters enables the RIP 9 to readily accept 27. 5+ wheels rolling on massive 2. 8-inch tires, should you feel the need to add another wheel size to your riding arsenal. If you're content with the provided 29-inch wheels, you'll find it easily clears a 29 x 2. 4-inch rear tire, which remains standard for aggressive trail riders seeking a balance between rolling speed and grip. Despite all of the changes above, Niner's Race Day Optimized (RDO) cons...

Niner RKT 9 RDO 3-Star XT 1x Complete Mountain Bike - 2017 Niner RKT 9 RDO 3-Star XT 1x Complete Mountain Bike - 2017
If you've ever caught yourself daydreaming deeply about the perfect bike on your way home from a ride, building one in your mind from the ground up with XC energy, a spirited disposition, but the ability to crush lines most assume are off-limits for the XC set, you're in luck. Sometimes, dreams do come true. As an plush XC bike with a podium-chasing attitude, the RKT 9 RDO 3-Star XT is a shining example of what pushing the limits of XC looks like. Let us clarify. In the case of the RKT 9, that means combining an energetic carbon frame, 120mm of squish for technical race courses or weekend exploration, and the proven efficiency of Boost spacing. Whether you're venturing onto shady, root-encrusted trails or putting it all on the line on raceday, trust the RKT 9's disarmingly playful attitude to match your enthusiasm at every turn. The Queen of Pain herself, known simply as Ms. Rusch off-trail, has summarized the RKT 9 RDO as the answer to her dreams, which means that Niner's goal of blending a twitchy race bike with a fearless bruiser of a trail beast wasn't too much of reach. On the contrary, the RKT 9 RDO fulfills that description uncannily well, using a short head tube and longer top tube to provide line cleaning confidence up front, and Boost spacing with the lowest standover height in Niner's line for a boundless supply of snappy aggression in the rear. Boost spacing allowed Niner to chop the chainstays to a stubby 439mm, which when paired with that low standover height, results in agile cornering and power-transferring stiffness. When the opportunity to spend a weekend chasing your armor-clad pals and their 5-inch monsters around rugged singletrack presents itself, one look at the RKT 9 RDO will be enough to tell you the answer is yes. Though geometry is a big part of the RKT 9 RDO's story, its carbon frame cannot be overlooked. Niner uses its RDO Carbon Compaction System (CCS) to ensure details like wall thickness and material distribution are flawless, el...

Niner RKT 9 RDO 5-Star X01 Eagle Complete Mountain Bike - 2017 Niner RKT 9 RDO 5-Star X01 Eagle Complete Mountain Bike - 2017
You've been taking hardtails onto downhill-only singletrack since you first started biking, and somehow, not having the funds for a 6-inch enduro monster right off the bat translated into a love affair with XC that you'd never walk away from now. Though your passion for XC hasn't faded, your relationship with it has grown with time, and rather than a hardtail with just a little squish up front, you expect a little more from your bike these days. Devour bumps, clean race courses, and dive into big lines with more plushness than your younger, hardtail-riding self could've dreamed of with Niner's RKT 9 RDO 5-Star Mountain Bike. Kitted out with the drivetrain of the self-sponsored cyclist's dreams and continuing to reap the rewards of a smart redesign in 2016, the RKT 9 RDO is ready to take your relationship with XC to towering heights. When redesigning the RKT for 2016, Niner started with the task of trying to bridge the gap between low-weight XC race machines and high-confidence, line-holding trail sleds. It hit its mark last year with such precision that for 2017, the brand's made no changes to the impressive frame. That means you'll still get to take advantage of the long-and-low swagger of the front end when heading into chunky spots, with over four-and-a-half inches of squish and the line-holding confidence that 29er tires are bred with backing you up. The use of Boost axle spacing in the front and rear also gave Niner the opportunity to slam the back wheel up and reduce the chainstays to a stubby 439mm. That, paired with the RKT 9 RDO's low standover height, translates to agile, aggressive cornering and acceleration from the race course to shuttle laps. Niner shapes this do-it-all carbon fiber frame carefully using its RDO Carbon Compaction System (CCS) for a precise, flawless result. Using CCS, Niner builds a frame with as little excess material as possible, hitting stiffness marks without compromise while eliminating structural imperfections and inconsiste...

Niner RKT 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2017 Niner RKT 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame - 2017
Clipping into Niner's RKT 9 RDO Mountain Bike Frame brings back fond memories of a time when XC was king and frame geometry wasn't so heavily influenced by slacked out gravity sleds. Niner's paraphrased goal in creating the RKT 9 RDO was to build a 3. 5in chassis that handles terrain like a five-inch bike but still climbs like an XC rocket, resulting in a 29in platform every bit as race-ready as any 27. 5in trail machine. On moderate terrain, speed is definitely the RKT's friend. It's easy to choose a gear and choose a line, trusting that the suspension's capability will carry you across rock-strewn trails and through corners with a nimbleness that we've rarely experienced on 29in wheels. Given that it's an XC race bike, Niner tweaked the RKT 9 RDO's CVA travel to hit the sweet spot of low-travel speed. In its initial stroke, the RKT's CVA suspension focuses on maintaining a firm, responsive pedaling platform. Even while riding the shock open, CVA encourages speed on rocky, root-latticed climbs. As roll overs and light rock gardens usher the travel into the mid stroke, CVA also embraces trail furniture without sacrificing momentum or straying from its line. As it hits the end of its 90mm, the travel ramps up to avoid harsh bottom-outs, extending the margin of error just a bit further for when enduro ambitions start to get the better of XC restraint. The frame is built according to the specifics of Niner's RDO Carbon Compaction System (CCS). CCS uses internal molds during the curing process to ensure precise control over wall thickness and material distribution, eliminating excess grams and structural imperfections like resin pooling. The geometry presents a few departures from Niner's typical recipe, including a longer effective top tube and a lower head tube. These adjustments net a lower, more aggressive rider position that incorporates some stabilizing elements of longer enduro geometries for an XC race machine that holds lines with no extra weight or sluggi...

One of the most versatile and smooth-riding hardtails on the market, the Niner SIR 9 27. 5+ 3-Star XT Complete Mountain Bike features the supple characteristics of Reynolds 853 steel construction paired with modernized trail geometry, 27. 5+ wheels for massive traction and rock-smoothing compliance, and 18 mounting points for bikepacking adventures. Whether you're seeking a steel hardtail for spirited rides in the mountains or a dependable pack mule for long-distance adventures, the SIR 9 satisfies your itch for exploration with its simplicity, strength, and smooth-riding characteristics. Making it even more versatile, the SIR 9 easily swaps the included 27. 5+ wheels for the momentum-carrying abilities of its 29-inch brethren. This is especially important, as it lends adaptability for varying trail ecosystems and riding disciplines. By now, you're probably aware the bike industry is constantly pushing the envelope on geometry, with things becoming slacker and longer to accommodate aggressive riding styles. The SIR 9 eagerly follows this modernized trail geometry with its longer top tube and shorter chainstays, which make the bike's handling all the more lively around corners and stable at high speeds. The wheelbase is longer as well, inspiring you to push the envelope when it comes to carrying speed on extended descents. Paired with the provided 120-millimeter Reba RL Solo Air fork, the SIR 9 moves from a rather XC-focused head tube angle of 70 degrees (on previous model) to a trail-worthy 68 degrees. This gives you added confidence to attack steep descents and technical trail sections previously on the edge of the old bike's comfort zone. Although it's slacker than ever, it still pedals and climbs with resounding efficiency, as Niner engineered it with a steeper 74-degree seat tube angle, which places you in an optimal pedaling position. It's no surprise the SIR 9 retains the supple ride quality of its Reynolds 853 steel construction, especially seeing its n...
