Scarpa Alien 3.0 Alpine Touring Boot Scarpa Alien 3.0 Alpine Touring Boot
At a first glance, the Scarpa Alien 3. 0 Alpine Touring Boot definitely looks like it's not from this planet, but then again, that's probably what recreational skiers think about you when you lap them three times in a row on the skintrack at extraterrestrial speeds. Designed for speed-obsessed ski mountaineers and randonnee racers, this boot puts a premium on weight and uphill performance in every aspect of its design, from the carbon cuff and shell to the vibration-absorbing Pebax tongue to the ultralight Dyneema string closure. Weighing in at a touch more than a pound a piece, these kicks are lighter than some trail running shoes. With the flick of the featherweight, strong A-light lever, you lock and release the cuff and shell in a single movement for a whopping 71-degree range of motion and lightning-fast transitions. Pressure points, hot spots, and boot-tinkering are the fastest ways to bring an otherwise efficient tour to a screeching, painful halt, so the micro-adjustable BOA closure system gets your custom fit dialed from the get-go and never loosens with time. A mountaineering-specific last and special Intuition Race 3. 0 liner bootie blend comfort, performance, and function, while the addition of a convenient pull tab, soft foam instep, and high-density foam upper and toe box ensure your foot remains comfortable during long ascents. Quick Step-In tech fittings speed up and smooth out the boot attachment process, but your objectives likely won't be summited with skis and skins alone. Hence, Scarpa teamed up with Vibram to create the UFO 3. 0 sole to cater to the usage standards of the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF). On the descent, the ergonomically designed carbon components crank the torsional rigidity of the boot all the way up for the demands of navigating technical terrain.

Scarpa Alien Alpine Touring Boot Scarpa Alien Alpine Touring Boot
Fresh from our friends on Alpha Centauri (sick mountains there, check 'em out if you haven't), the Scarpa Alien Alpine Touring Boot splits the difference between full-blown rando racing boot and hardcore tourer, with a nylon/carbon shell and cuff that are plenty light enough to crush the skin track while still handling their business on steep faces and in shotgun couloirs. The Alien's most distinguishing feature is the fit. Not many boots can boast a micro-adjustable Boa closure system, but the Alien uses it to secure the foot smoothly and evenly, completely eliminating pressure points and dead spots. Your feet will also dig the HRP Intuition Liner, which is instantly comfortable and offers superb touring performance in any conditions, as well as the UFO Vibram Sole (also recently received from our space friends) which cushions shocks and provides top-notch traction in all kinds of terrain. Of course, what's most important about a lightweight, race-bred touring boot is its uphill performance. The Alien has a 2-piece construction that locks into ski mode and opens with a single A-Light buckle, providing 60 degrees of uphill-touring power and variable degrees of forward lean between 9 and 13 degrees for the way down. When you're locked in ski mode, the Alien's Propulsion Tech System ensures that the cuff remains stiff, giving you all the power and edge grip you need to handle the steep and icy sections that are part of every serious ski descent. Scarpa also gave the Alien a Quick Step-In system, which uses indicators and self-guiding notches to make it easy to step into your tech bindings, even in snowy spots.

Scarpa F1 Alpine Touring Boot Scarpa F1 Alpine Touring Boot
You've seen one lightweight touring boot, you've seen 'em all, right' Right' Err, wrong. That used to be pretty much the case--maybe a little extra carbon here or some added stiffness there--but Scarpa's F1 Alpine Touring Boot, while still recognizably a ski boot, has some tech wizardry that's not so ordinary. The cuff closes via a powerful FBC fast-buckle closure powerstrap, letting you get every ounce of power out of the 95 flex, and a Carbon Core insert and X-Cage EVO cuff structure make the F1 ski more like the burlier Maestrale while keeping the weight in Alien territory. Add in the 62 degrees of cuff rotation for buttery smooth skinning, and you've got one fly pair of backcountry kicks.A smooth-flexing Pebax tongue and HPA cuff and shell cinch around your foot with the same BOA ratchet-closure system found in the ultralight Alien, giving you a smooth, pinch-free fit without the need for heavy buckles. What's more, you can fine-tune to the F1 to your stance thanks to the 20-22 degree adjustable forward lean. The stock Intuition liner (which has a skinning-ready flex zone over the Achilles) and roomy 102mm last serve up a tasty blend of performance and all-day comfort during dawn-to-dusk missions. To top it all off, there's a Vibram UFO Evo Scarpa sole for serious traction on rocks and hard snow, and an extra removable power strap over the liner.

Everything that can be done has been done, so you might as well hang on to your eight-year-old AT boots, grit your teeth, and keep skinning, right' Right' Nope. Scarpa Freedom Alpine Touring Boot - Women's Scarpa Freedom Alpine Touring Boot - Women's
There's a lot to be said for a pure touring set-up, but it doesn't come cheap. If striking a balance between uphill and downhill performance without breaking the bank on new boots and bindings is more your style, the Scarpa Freedom Women's Alpine Touring Boot is probably something you'll be into. The Freedom has Vibram Mountain Piste rubber soles, which are designed to function with traditional alpine DIN bindings, but can be switched out for tech soles if you decide you need improved uphill performance or your suddenly with-it grandma sends you an unexpected pair of tech bindings for your b-day. Your hiking will be golden even without super-light tech bindings, though, since the Freedom leads the women's AT boot category with a 27-degree range of cuff movement; simply switch the Ride Power Block into hike mode to disengage the cuff, or lock it down to drive the 110-flex Freedom down whatever line you've been eyeing. Once you're locked in, shredding the downhill is as easy as crushing the skintrack. The Freedom is built with Carbon Core Technology, which molds the lower PU shell around a carbon-fiber frame, yielding a boot that's strong and stiff without carrying any unnecessary weight, so you can drive even burly freeride skis without worrying that they'll overwhelm your boots. The upper cuff, also made of PU, is designed to accommodate women's feet and legs, with a narrower heel, lower calf, and a higher instep that work with the heat-moldable Intuition Speed Ride liner to give you a snug, warm, and comfortable fit for the whole season.

Scarpa Freedom RS Alpine Touring Boot Scarpa Freedom RS Alpine Touring Boot
Last year's Freedom SL was the biggest, baddest boot that Scarpa had ever made, so what did Scarpa go and do this year' Oh, just came up with an even burlier and beefier offering that can climb like a goat and shred like a freeride boot, so you can charge lines that used to be reserved for jump-turning weight weenies. Called the Freedom RS (Rocket Sauce' We're not sure.), the new boot is nominally an alpine touring boot, but that designation is belied by the 130 flex, carbon-reinforced Pebax Rnew shell, and race-inspired polyamide cuff that put a premium on downhill awesomeness. When you're skiing, the RS feels like a pure alpine boot, thanks in part to the reinforced race-style upper of the Intuition Cross Fit Ride RS liner, but its Ride Power Block XT Ski/Hike switch gives you 25 degree of killer cuff rotation, so you can make short work of skintracks and ridge hikes. The burliness of the Power Block gives you a rock-solid feel when you're punching big faces at high speed, and the removable spoiler and adjustable forward lean let you customize your setup to achieve maximum uphill efficiency and downhill power. Around your feet and ankles, the Cross Fit Ride liner provides heat-moldable comfort, and the four micro-adjustable buckles let you fine tune the fit for all-day comfort and skiing precision. Scarpa topped the RS off with a big ol' power strap to let you drive your skis as hard as you can handle and also made sure the grippy Vibram Mountain Plus tech soles were removable, so you can pop them off and replace them with traditional alpine soles if you're spending the week terrorizing in-bounds terrain.

Scarpa Freedom SL Alpine Touring Boot Scarpa Freedom SL Alpine Touring Boot
What's the use in schlepping your backcountry setup to the top of gnarly chutes and untouched pillow lines if your boot can't hang on the descent' The Scarpa Freedom SL Alpine Touring Boot carries to your throne as King of the Mountain while balancing weight and hard-charging performance. The burly 120 flex index and four-buckle design offer a more aggressive ride than the standard Freedom, but the SL is almost a pound lighter thanks to the stiff, light Pebax Rnew shell with Advanced Injection Technology. The boot features a Ride Power Block walk mode that delivers 27 degrees of frictionless range of motion for efficient climbing and easily locks back into ski mode for rippin' power transmission on the downhill. Long gone are the days when you had to cram your tootsies into torturous race-style boots to get the performance you need. The 101mm anatomic last provides a precise and sensitive fit for medium width feet, while the heat-moldable Intuition Speed Ride liners wrap your feet in buttery comfort usually reserved for footwear other than ski boots. The Freedom SL slips effortlessly into all AT and tech (TLT) bindings with the rugged, lugged Vibram Mountain Plus sole, but for skiers who occasionally catch a bad case of ride-the-chairlift-itis, you can swap for the Vibram Mountain Piste sole (sold separately) and click into what those resort people call "ahllll-pine biiin-dings," or however the name of that strange contraption is pronounced. Look, the Freedom SLs know you'll be spending most of your time on backcountry adventures and grinding in the skintrack, but chairlifts happen to the best of us from time to time. These boots won't judge.

Scarpa Freedom SL Alpine Touring Boot - Women's Scarpa Freedom SL Alpine Touring Boot - Women's
The Scarpa Women's Freedom SL Alpine Touring Boot is Queen of the Mountain in the Scarpa freeride line. It's the burliest, with a 120 flex index, but almost a pound lighter than the standard Freedom. The SL also uses a lighter Intuition liner and more aggressive sole. Compared to Scarpa's touring boots, the Freedom SL is more versatile (added alpine capability) and is stiffer and more powerful, but it does weigh more than the Maestrale or F1. It has a Ride Power Block that delivers frictionless motion for efficient climbing and locks in back support for power transmission on the downhill. For the woman who needs a boot that can charge off the lift in alpine bindings or slip efficiently into the backcountry with tech (TLT) bindings, the Freedom SL has few equals.Rather than rebadge the men's version with a little pink and a soft flex, Scarpa's engineers made the last a little smaller and the cuff a little lower to match the shape and size of a woman's foot and calf. The Pebax Rnew shell overlaps for a gap-less fit. Its Carbon Core technology wraps it around a bomber carbon frame for lightweight and allover stiffness for precision control. The Intuition FR Speed liner boot is molded with the shell for a seamless fit and powerful performance, key in making the distinction between a competent alpine/AT boot and one that kills it. The 101mm anatomic last features Axial Power Control for lateral stiffness and sensitivity. The interchangeable Vibram sole gives you lugged tenacity when hiking over scree or down-climbing into a rocky chute--the boot comes with the Rockered Mountain Plus sole for AT and tech bindings, but the Mountain Piste sole is available separately for those who rip on alpine bindings, too. You'll feel the advantage in an instant and respond with a peaceful mind. After all, you don't want to charge down a finger chute with already-frayed nerves.

Scarpa Gea Alpine Touring Boot - Women's Scarpa Gea Alpine Touring Boot - Women's
Scarpa's Gea series are already best-selling bosses due to their amazing design at an affordable price for beginning backcountry skiers, and while some ski companies simply change the color of ski boots each season, Scarpa made the Women's Gea Alpine Touring Boot better than ever for the new season, so don't get fooled again. This year, the Gea is remarkably lighter, comfier, and more secure than ever before. A 100 flex and 101mm last make it a great option for skiers taking their first skin track into the backcountry, but it'll also serve lighter veterans who value comfort over precision. Scarpa updated the Gea with an all Grilamid construction to ensure long-lasting stiffness and durability without much weight--it's not as stiff or light as carbon, but that's how Scarpa kept the price down on this boot. The tongue is still flexible Pebax to ensure that easier entry that made Scarpa's original Gea a best-seller. Other updates include a thermo-moldable Intuition liner that boot-fitters can heat up to mold to your foot's exact shape for even more comfort, and the Vibram rubber sole has a new tread specifically designed for rocky summits. The Speedlock Plus ski/walk mode isn't new for the year, but that's because it was so damn fine last year.

Scarpa Gea RS Alpine Touring Boot - Women's Scarpa Gea RS Alpine Touring Boot - Women's
Back in the days when phone had cords and computers made death noises when they connected to the internet, you couldn't have a backcountry ski boot that charged like a full-on alpine boot. Times change, though, and now that you're connected everywhere you go, you might as well also enjoy the all-in-one freeride and touring performance of the Scarpa Gea RS Women's Alpine Touring Boot. With an rugged 120 flex, stiff polyamide shell, burly power strap, and Evo V-Frame cuff, the RS charges steep lines, big faces, and deep pow as hard as you want to, but still crushes the skin track with a 37 range of cuff motion that'd you'd expect to find in a softer boot. It also weighs barely three pounds, so your hip flexors won't be screaming in pain if you have to skin more than a few miles to get to your line. Scarpa hooked the Gea up with it's brand-spanking-new Mirage Pro ski/walk mode, which locks the shell securely to the cuff with two metal pins for bombproof downhill performance and makes it easier to switch between ski and walk modes. It also gave it a stiff Pebax Axial Alpine tongue, which hinges at the toe and actually pivots sideways away from the shell, letting you get your boot on and off easily as well as providing a smooth, progressive flex that eliminates dead spots and stiff zones. It also allows the oversized Zeus buckles and instep-locking Predator HRS strap to securely wrap around your foot, eliminating sloppy fits and uncomfortable pressure points. The Gea comes with a stiff heat-moldable Intuition Pro Flex RS Women's liner so you can dial in the perfect fit, a Fitting Indicator System to help you align your Dynafit Quick Step-In tech inserts with your binding, and is finished off with a grippy Vibram Cayman rubber sole for confident footing on slick terrain, ice, and rocks.

Scarpa Gea RS Alpine Touring Boot - Women's Scarpa Gea RS Alpine Touring Boot - Women's
The Gea RS is Scarpa's stiffest and most powerful women's AT boot, designed for the ripping chick who devours big ascents with the speed and grace of a gazelle, and charges steep lines like a freeride champ. Scarpa buffed up the Gea RS this year, with a lightweight revolutionary design that's equally at home on pinner couloirs as it is on the skin track. The Gea RS features the same aggressive 120 flex and 101mm last as its predecessor, with a revamped carbon-infused Grilamid shell that increases stiffness and power without the weight. Scarpa ditched the front buckle, jumping to a lower-profile three-buckle system that eliminates bulk, as well as jumping from a 37 to an impressive 60 range of motion in walk mode--a welcome change that drastically increases uphill efficiency. With Scarpa's year-long tinkering, they've shed about five ounces per boot, a change you'll definitely notice when you leave your buddies in the dust on the skinner. Scarpa finished off the Gea RS with a grippy Vibram rubber sole, so you'll be steady and confident while traversing icy ridges and slick scree fields.

Scarpa Maestrale Alpine Touring Boot - Men's Scarpa Maestrale Alpine Touring Boot - Men's
Still reigning as the best-selling AT boot of all time, Scarpa buffed up the beloved Maestrale Alpine Touring boot to bring you a terrain-crushing backcountry machine that sheds weight on the skin track with increased power on steep descents. This year's boots are stiffer, jumping from 100 flex to a more aggressive 110, with the same comfortable 101mm last as their predecessor. The new Maestrale features a carbon-infused Grilamid shell with a Pebax tongue, shaving weight and increasing stiffness so you can tear into pinner couloirs and blast through chunder with stability and confidence.Scarpa increased the range of motion in walk mode to an impressive 60 , a change your legs will be stoked about on especially long approaches. The new Maestrale still features a heat-moldable Intuition liner, with a new, stiffer design and less seams in the toe area to keep your feet warmer and more comfortable. Scarpa scrapped the old side-hinge tongue, eliminating countless broken hinges that occurred with the old model, and swapped the lowest buckle with an equalized cable system that tightens the whole forefoot. This new three-buckle system is simpleer and sheds bulk, for a more streamlined design.

Scarpa Maestrale RS Alpine Touring Boot Scarpa Maestrale RS Alpine Touring Boot
Remember when backcountry touring meant wool sweaters and knickers, skinny skis, leather boots, and low-angle turns while whistling carefree tunes' Neither does the hard-charging Scarpa Maestrale RS Alpine Touring Boot. Wool is great, as are mellow turns, but the Maestrale's more interested in shredding the crap out of steep chutes, ripping big faces, and slaying deep pow. It's 20% stiffer and only 1. 5oz heavier than the old Maestrale, with a burly 120 flex, stiff polyamide shell, and stout power strap that provide plenty of juice when the lines get big but still checks in at under 3. 5 lbs for most sizes, so you'll be able to make it up the skin track faster than your partner. The cuff also rotates a full 37, which isn't too far behind many more uphill-oriented AT boots. Scarpa's new Mirage Pro ski/walk mode makes it super easy to switch between uphill and downhill settings, and locks the cuff to the shell with two stiff metal pins for serious power and control without the risk of coming unlocked when you don't want it to. In conjunction with the Evo V-Frame cuff, this gives the Maestrale plenty of fore and aft stiffness, so you'll be able to crush it without feeling like you're wobbling backwards and forwards. Perhaps the Maestrale's most distinctive feature is the stiff Axial Alpine Pebax tongue, which hinges at the toe and pivots out away from the boot for super easy entry and exit, as well as a smooth and progressive flex that eliminates stiff and dead spots. It cinches down better than traditional overlap-style shells for uniform volume control through the forefoot, eliminating pinching and slop, and the oversize Zeus buckles and Predator HRS instep strap increase heel hold and power without making the Maestrale heavy and clunky. It comes complete with a heat-moldable Intuition Pro Flex RS liner and Vibram Cayman rubber sole for a customizable fit and serious traction, respectively, and features Dynafit Quick Step-In tech inserts with the Fitting Ind...

Scarpa Maestrale RS Alpine Touring Boot Scarpa Maestrale RS Alpine Touring Boot
Scarpa is a family-owned company that's been designing mountain footwear from its home base in Asolo, Italy since 1938. So, it should come as no surprise that when Scarpa went to work redesigning one of its most successful alpine touring boots, it didn't just throw out what it's learned through the years to start from scratch, but built off a solid foundation to refine what's become one of the most reliable and versatile touring boots in the backcountry. On the surface, the revamped Maestrale RS Alpine Touring Boot doesn't appear to have a lot in common with the original Maestrale, but it's built on the same roomy 101mm last for comfort on the ascent and maintains much of the key features that have made the original Maestrale one of the most popular AT boots in the industry. Trimming weight from an already lightweight boot is no easy feat, but Scarpa was able trim over five ounces from each boot--while making the boot stiffer in the process. This is achieved by making the shell from a lightweight Grilamid and reinforcing it with Grilamid LFT, which uses long-strand carbon fiber to increase rigidity and keep weight to a minimum. The full Grilamid cuff is vented to let body heat escape and is backed by an OutDry waterproof, breathable membrane so snow doesn't work its way through to the liner when you're breaking trail through knee-deep powder or setting the bootpack up a narrow couloir. The original Maestrale certainly had its quirks--namely, a prone-to-freezing walk mode and hinged tongue that liked to break at inopportune situations--but the newest iteration of the Maestrale eliminates both these issues by overhauling both components. Replacing the old single-hinge tongue with a fixed split Pebax tongue gives the boot the progressive forward flex of a three-piece alpine boot, and the friction-free walk mode takes the 37-degree cuff rotation of the original Maestrale and dials it up to 60 degrees. And since the metal-on-metal mechanism is external, you won't have ..
