Highline M2 GTX
By Steve Mann
Merrell's M2 Highline GTX boot represents the heart of Merrell's boot line-a general purpose, all-weather hiking and backpack boot. We've used these boots for over a year now, with great success. For most of our test crew, the M2 Highline is their favorite general-purpose backpacking and hiking boot.
With more time to field test the M2s, we were able to use the boots in a variety of conditions, from light mountaineering day hikes, to boulder-hopping, slickrock scrambles, and full-load backpacking on established mountain and desert trails. The M2 performed well without exception.
The main body consists of Italian full-grain leather with a Gore-Tex fabric bootie and taped nylon insole, which makes the boot waterproof. We tested the M2's waterproofing in the slot-canyon narrows of Willis Creek, Utah, on a short day hike. As we made frequent crossings through up to 4 or 5 inches of clear, cold stream water, our socks and feet stayed dry throughout the day.
All of the testers expressed surprise and appreciation for the boots' lightweight and out-of-the-box comfort. One tester used his M2's to summit California's Mount Whitney just one week after strapping them on for the first time. He found no break in period was necessary, as his feet stayed comfortable the entire trip.
The rest of the crew also gave the M2 high marks for comfort. The glove-leather bellows tongue and collar keep the top of your foot cushioned. A dual density footbed, air-cushioned mid sole, and Vibram Speedhiker sole provide support and comfort for your potentially tired toes and heels.
One tester noted that although wearing well broken-in boots, he consistently developed Achilles blisters on extended steep ascents. Although I attribute this flaw more to our tester's weak Achilles heels, rather than the design of the M2, his experience emphasizes that what works well for one hiker may not work well for another. Despite the occasional blister, he still rated the M2 as his favorite pair of general-purpose boots.
Other notable strengths were the boot's superior ankle support and high durability. For example, molded rubber heel and toe protectors add durability. The boot leather seems virtually indestructible. Regular treatments with NikWax will keep the Merrells looking nearly new, despite your best efforts to scuff the hell outta them. The only durability issue we encountered was the wrap-up toe protector began to work loose on a couple of the boots. A couple of drops of super glue took care of the problem. Vibram's legendary soles seem to last forever.
On the style side, the Merrell's appearance received rave reviews. We first discovered the popularity of the boot when a couple of the women testers wore the boots around town during initial break-in. Other women would stop and ask them where they got them and what brand they were.
Summary:
If you had to purchase just one pair of boots to satisfy all your outdoor needs, from deserts to mountains, Merrell's Highline M2 GTX is the boot for you.
At a slight 3 pounds 8 ounces, the lightweight M2 ranges from Men's sizes 7 through 12, and 13 and 14, and women's size 5 through 10. The suggested retail price is $200.
