Camping Tent?

Question:
Is there an inexpensive tent (under $200) that you could recommend? I am 6-4 and it should sleep at least 3, 2-3 season tent.

Thanks.

Answer:
Here are a few options:

The Eureka Mountain Pass 4XT tent is a good 4-person tent. It is lightweight for its capacity, but a little over your price. It retails for $260, but I saw it from Campmor (www.campmor.com) for $239. It should be large enough for your height as it measures 8 ft. 6 in. x 7 ft . 6 in. I have used the Mountain Pass 4XT and it is one my favorite 4 person tents, with full rainfly coverage, lightweight (per person), and two vestibules. I have reviewed the Mountain Pass 4XT at www.gearreview.com/mountainpass.asp. The 99 models have new colors and a window in the vestibule.

Eureka also makes the Timberline 4 ($190) and the Timberlite 3XT ($220) and Timberline 4XT ($200). I have not used the Timberline or Timberlite tents, so I can't give you a recommendation. In general they are more in an A-frame style, so they will have less head room than the Mountain Pass.

All of the Eureka tents can be seen online at www.jwa.com/camping/eureka/eureka.html.

LL Bean makes good tents at affordable prices. They have a 4 person dome tent for $179, but it is very heavy. It would be fine for car camping, but not for backpacking at almost 12 pounds. It should be wide enough for your height at 8'5"L x 9'5"W.

Quest makes the Sundance tent for 3 at $190. Quest makes good quality tents, but they can be hard to find. I have not reviewed this tent. I may be a bit short for your height.

Those look like the best options I can find. I hope that helps. My bottom line recommendation is the Eureka Mountain Pass 4XT.
