Review of Vasque Catalyst CrossTrail and Vasque Velocity Trail Running Shoes
By Matt Smith
Over the past several years, we have seen a tremendous push by hardcore backpackers to cut every possible ounce. Straps and zippers, pockets and layers of fabric have all been cut in the quest to travel light. As loads have decreased, the need for heavy, rugged boots has diminished. At the same time, the popularity of trail running has increased sharply. The need for a shoe appropriate for both activites is filled largely by running shoes, trail running shoes, or cross training shoes.
I tested the Vasque Catalyst and the Vasque Velocity, through a wide range of activities and found them both excellent shoes for ultralight backpacking, day hiking, and trail running. I put over 300 miles on each shoe during the testing process and was impressed with break-in time, comfort, and durability.
The shoes are similar with a few distinct differences. The Catalyst is general purpose with a slightly stiffer mid-sole and Stealth Rubber sole, while the Velocity is geared toward higher impact, aggressive use. The Velocity is has reflective lace loops and a rugged toe rand that holds up to kicking logs, rocks, and the occassional tumble.
Flexibility of the sole on both shoes is great; stiff enough to soften pointy rocks, but soft enough to feel your way while scrambling up slickrock slopes. The sticky rubber soles provide good grip on most surfaces, without sacrificing too much durability. The lace spacing allowed excellent adjustment to the shape of my foot. The laces seemed a little long once the shoes were securely tied, which presented a problem on the Velocity which on my test pair had a zip-cover for the laces. It is my understanding the zip-cover will be removed on production models.
Summary: The Vasque Catalyst and Vasque Velocity are both good options for fast, light wilderness travel, with or without a pack (under about 25 pounds). Both are available in Gore-Tex and non Gore-Tex versions. Prices range from $80-$110 depending on models.
