Review of MSR Pocket Rocket Stove
By Matt Smith

In the constant quest to cut weight, and increase the efficiency of backpacking equipment, MSR has developed the Pocket Rocket. Protected in your pack by a rigid triangular storage case (about 4 inches tall, 1 1/2 in on each sde of the triangle), the Pocket Rocket is rugged, dependable, and most importantly, light (3 oz).

Fueled by butane or iso-butane, the Pocket Rocket pumps out loads of heat to melt snow, boil water, and simmer you favorite foods. I found the boil time for a quart of cold water at 8000 feet to be approximately 2 1/2 minutes on full heat with a full canister of fuel. Of course, boil times are largely dependent on altitude, temperature, and the remaining fuel (hence pressure) in the canister. Your mileage may vary.

The folding pot rest is convenient, and just the right size for a 1 quart pan. I used the stove to boil up to 3 quarts of water at a time, but had to be very careful not to bump the pot as it was very top-heavy, even with the titanium stove base.

Summary: The Pocket Rocket is a great compressed fuel stove. Weighing just 3 oz. and costing under $40, it is a dependable, economic choice for everyone from a scout, to a seasoned, active outdoorsman.
