Eclipse 8099
By Jeff Porcaro
Brunton has been in business for over 100 years and they are now raising
the standard for compasses that others should follow. The new Eclipse series sets a high standard in navigation; it is easier and faster to read. This compass incorporates a patent pending disk
magnet. Just align the circles and you'll know exactly where you're going. This circle over circle system provides an accurate bearing to 1 degree.
The Eclipse 8099 is a great compass to use with a GPS receiver. It includes UTM grids, for use with maps, inside the rubber shoe housing.
Along with the UTM grids is information on survival, first aid, distance scales, and LAT/LON scales. We found the extra information useful.
We used this compass while field testing GPS receivers. One problem: it is easy to mistake the heading numbers for the bearing numbers.
The bearing numbers are green and harder to see than the black heading numbers. However, using this compass, it is simple to line up a landmark through the gun-sight.
Summary:
The Eclipse 8099 is the Cadillac of compasses. It is easy to use and includes extra valuable information on laminated cards. With all of its features, this compass is the first and last compass you will ever need.
The suggested retail price is $79.95.
